Today I thought I’d tell you a short story about how I’ve learnt my craft and how I’ve fallen in love with wedding photography.

As you know I’m lucky enough to live on the beautiful Isle of Wight (as I’m sure some of you reading this may do too), and each summer we have a whole host of fantastic music events and festivals; the two biggest being the Isle of Wight Festival in June and Bestival (my favourite) in September. As a massive music lover I found myself going to these year after year and one day I decided to pick up a camera, learn how to use it and take it along with me.

I had no experience and did it entirely for fun but soon found myself fortunate enough to be photographing the festivals professionally in the pit right at the very front with the national media shooting all the big names!

This lucky break was not only an amazing experience for me personally but it also forced me to learn my craft very quickly as I had to capture all the action in what was a tiny window of time, in some of the worst lighting with everything going crazy around me! Oh, and the slight pressure of the person I was photographing being a mega star…

Over the next couples of years as I attended more festivals I found myself photographing headline bands from Madness to Lily Allen, Simply Red to Massive Attack but I soon learnt that it was being outside, capturing the excitement, emotion and the atmosphere in the crowds that I enjoyed most!

At a festival the emotion I love capturing is spread throughout the weekend, whereas a wedding has it all and much, much more in that one special day. From the moment I realised that, I knew that wedding photography was for me and it explains why I LOVE photographing weddings so much!

Newport IOW Bridal Exhibition review

Wow, What a show! The doors opened at 11am yesterday for the first IOW wedding exhibition and I was nervously apprehensive of what to expect. Clearly a lot of effort had gone in to the show by organisers (Finishing Touches and The Bridal Room) and exhibitors alike; but no-one could predict what the turnout would be.

Now I can officially say that it was massive with over 1000 people turning out to see the 54 exhibitors lucky enough to be there!

I’ll keep this post short and sweet because pictures are worth a thousand words, but I just wanted to thank everyone who came along to the show, especially those who stopped by my stand to say Hi, and wish everyone the best of luck with their wedding plans.

P.S. I’m adding an extra-long P.S. on this to shout out some amazing people who without I wouldn’t have been able to exhibit yesterday and so therefore they are awesome:

Vision Graphix (printing), IOW Motorcycles (assembly), Ghetto Graphics (vinyl), IlloBooth (design), Finishing Touches (co-organiser), Prosafe Electrical (assembly), Island Printers (printing), ScribbleHands (artwork), Biltmore Printers (banner), The Bridal Room (co-organiser).

And whilst some of them I’ve mentioned, an extra special thanks to my amazing other half Becky for all her help and support, my very talented Dad (and Mum) for building my stand and their input on the design and finally George for all his help running around and transporting our creation!

Isle-of-Wight-wedding-exhibition Have you heard about the Isle of Wight wedding exhibition? It takes place on January 22nd 2012 at Medina Leisure Centre near Newport. Finishing Touches and The Bridal Room have joined forces to put together this one day exhibition which showcases the very best of what the Island has to offer, and I’m privileged enough to have been chosen to exhibit there.

Hosted under one roof there will be a variety of wedding suppliers from florists to cars, cakes to marquees, you’ll find everything in one place along with cat walk shows and advice to help you find the perfect dress.

Come along and see it all for yourselves, and make sure you pop by to say Hi!

Best of 2011 review

It seems crazy that 2011 has been and gone, and we’re already well on our way into the New Year. As you can probably tell by the lateness of my post (and distinct lack of blogging), 2011 has flown by for me. So I’ve decided to take a moment to sit down, take it all in and share a few words and photos with you.

I had a fantastic year capturing beautiful weddings in picturesque gardens, grand country houses and some exclusive venues. Two of my personal highlights included a whole weekend of festival weddings and photographing a very happy pair of newly-weds dancing in the carnival procession! Weddings are fantastic and I have the best job in the world capturing all the passion, energy and excitement.

I feel so privileged to have been let in to so many peoples’ lives and would like to say a HUGE thank you to all of my 2011 couples and everyone I’ve worked with. So much laughter; so much love, and I feel very lucky to have been chosen to capture all those special moments for eternity.

Looking ahead, 2012 is set to be even more awesome, so I hope you will join me in raising a glass (or mug) to toast all the lovely couples getting married on the Isle of Wight in 2012.

Twilight Kristen Stewart Robert Pattinson secret Isle of Wight wedding

After spending last New Years Eve on the Isle of Wight, Breaking Dawn stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson (or Robsten as they are affectionately known) have once again been linked to the Island. This time In Touch magazine reports that the Twilight stars are planning a secret 2012 wedding on the Isle of Wight.

The magazine quotes a “cast mate” as saying the low-key couple “will probably opt for Britain’s secluded Isle of Wight” for the nuptials.

According to the In Touch source, Stewart is hoping for a “more intimate” ceremony than the “wedding of the century” staged by Bella Swan and Edward Cullen in the movie.

Whether it’s true or not the Isle of Wight certainly has a magical quality about it which suits the film down to a tee (I may have been ‘forced’ to watch all of them by my better half)… So are you planning on following in the rumoured footsteps of the happy couple and getting married on the Island? Or maybe you’re planning a beautiful Twilight themed wedding? If so, leave a comment below about your plans and ideas, or get in touch for a chat about Isle of Wight wedding photography as I’d LOVE to be involved!
