Wedding dress rain cover test Rainaway Bride

March 28th, 2013

English weather is unpredictable at the best of times and rain on your wedding day can be a couple’s worst nightmare. Wedding dress rain cover Chris CowleyEnglish weather is unpredictable at the best of times and rain on your wedding day can be a couple’s worst nightmare. You’ve picked a gorgeous dress, you’ve had your hair and make-up perfected and now you’re all set to walk down the aisle in style. Then, rain drops start falling from the sky… All you can think about now is how you’re going to be dragging the beautiful train of your dress through puddles and dirt and then what about your hair? It’s going to be ruined in the wind that’s joined the now torrential, horrible rain.

These are exactly the thoughts that went through a wedding dress designers mind on the Isle of Wight and this inspired Karen Robb from Dornellie to create the Rainaway Bride.

Rainaway Bride is a waterproof wedding dress rain cover designed specifically to protect you and your dress from the wind and rain on your big day. It is a waterproof cloak which has an elasticated hem allowing you to scoop up your beautiful wedding dress away from puddles and mud leaving you to walk without fear of dragging your dress along the wet and mucky ground. It fits nearly all gowns and trains and has a large hood which protects your hair, make-up, headpiece and/or veil if it should be raining or windy on your wedding day.

Having worked with Karen previously I asked if she was up for putting Rainaway Bride to the test for a photoshoot to show how good it really was. Whilst this was just an excuse for me to take a bride and groom to a muddy pit to make some creative wedding photos I’m pleased to say that she accepted the challenge and with a volunteer bride and groom we headed out to Knighton Sandpit to create some unique wedding photos which pushed the rain covers protection to its limits!

On what can only be described as a freezing winter’s day last weekend we put the rain cover through some perhaps more “extreme” scenarios including climbing sand banks, running through mud, jumping in puddles, throwing mud and even a water fight! To end the day we had our couple stand next to a big puddle and someone drove through it sending a sheet of water over the two of them!

We really put the rain cover through its paces and the real show of how well the Rainaway Bride protects a wedding dress was the big reveal at the end where the bride stepped out from the cover. She looked pristine; and the dress – totally dry!

The whole day was filmed by Michael from Wight Productions whose excellent video I’ve included at the bottom of this post. Special thanks go out to Karen for allowing us to test her rain cover, the bride and groom for putting it through its paces, Dan for arranging the venue and George and Grace for their assistance on the day.

P.S. Annoyingly, I got covered in mud and soaked – so although the bride got to do the fun bit splashing in puddles I actually came out worse off as the cover worked so well!

The importance of your Wedding Album

March 11th, 2013

Wedding albums are more than just a collection of amazing photos. Do you remember looking through your parents wedding album as a child? Wedding album additional copiesWedding albums are more than just a collection of amazing photos. Do you remember looking through your parents wedding album as a child? Imagine being in your parents shoes re-living their joy, excitement, love and emotion, all captured in those pages with you sat next to them. As cheesy as it may sound, wedding albums are a family heirloom and a fine art wedding album is one of the best ways of preserving the beautiful images from your wedding in a timeless format you can enjoy forever.

When you open your album all those happy memories and emotions from your big day come flooding back; as you turn each page you’re able to relive exactly how you felt the moment you put on your wedding dress, how your partner felt the first time he saw you, that magical first dance and just how wonderful your day was spending it with your nearest and dearest.

As the years go by after your big day your memories start to fade, but the carefully chosen photos on each page bring everything straight back as if it was yesterday. To me being able to do that is priceless and that is why wedding albums are so important.
Wedding album couple testimonial Jo and Alex

“Just a quick email to say that we received our albums and we love them! Thank you so so much! We presented both sets of parents with the albums on Sunday and they were very happy!”

It’s impossible to overestimate the importance of a wedding album – think beyond sharing your amazing day and proudest moments online and instead imagine wowing your future grandchildren with a bound collection of beautiful photographs.

By investing in an amazing wedding photographer for your day you understand how valuable these photos are and the fact that they will allow you to relieve all the special moments from your day for eternity. We live in a digital age and whilst it’s important to have copies of your wedding photos digitally, it’s killed the enjoyment of printed, tangible photos (and it’s a crying shame to keep all these beautiful images locked away on your computer)!

When looking through my wedding photography brochure I encourage couples to consider a fine art wedding album for exactly this reason- I use the most amazing, hand bound albums which are printed on archival quality paper and I personally design each one in a clean, timeless style.

If you would like to view my sample album in person just get in touch and let’s have a chat over a cuppa.

IOW wedding magazine cover

The Isle of Wight wedding magazine officially launched this week. It’s the first magazine on the Island dedicated entirely to weddings and they’ve allowed me to share a sneak preview with you! The team behind it (the publishers of Island Life) have been working around the clock to produce a magazine full of features which you and your partner will find useful in planning for your big day.

The elegant, glossy magazine sits perfectly alongside the national wedding mags but provides a local touch featuring real IOW weddings to inspire your own as well as 164 pages of bridal ideas!

Over the last couple of months I’ve been lucky enough to work closely with the Isle of Wight wedding magazine team and so I’ve seen first-hand how much thought, planning and attention to detail has gone in to the making of it. Their aim was to produce a stylish and elegant magazine which inspires as well as informs by introducing you to some of the amazing wedding suppliers we have on the Island – which I think they’ve done perfectly.

You can grab your copy from newsagents across the Island as well as other selected outlets (including the venues and suppliers featured in the first issue). A list of outlets where you can find the magazine will be published on the Isle of Wight wedding magazine website in due course:  http://www.iwweddings.com/

P.S. I’ve been allowed to share little sneak preview with you:

In November, Northwood House hosted the wedding of two archaeologists – Shannon and Jon. Yes, that’s right –actual real life archaeologists; and they even had a temple-themed wedding cake and table names! Amazing!

When they aren’t digging holes, the couple live in Cambridge but came to the Isle of Wight to get married in St James’ church (East Cowes) which was Jon’s local church growing up. They arranged for the priest who Christened Jon as a child to do a reading during the service but he wasn’t the only special guest at their wedding. The couple informed me when I first met them that I would be tasked with ensuring I photographed Guntha – the couples doll mascot who accompanies them on archaeological digs all over the world – enjoying their celebrations which was a great challenge!

A moment pictured below is of when the best men presented a booklet of photos to accompany their stories – one of the most embarrassing shots was the groom sprawled out on the grass, totally drunk and completely naked which you can imagine caused quite a reaction!

One of the things that Shannon and Jon loved about Northwood House is the beautiful pillared area facing out on to the lawns. Being a winter wedding (mid-November) it was a bit dark to enjoy them properly so Stage Gear Hire expertly lit the area and we ended the night with some creative wedding photos dancing between the pillars to create some awesome silhouettes.

Quay Arts  is a licensed wedding venue right in the centre of Newport, Isle of Wight alongside the harbour. It is probably best known as a contemporary art gallery but did you know that you can also get married at Quay Arts? That’s right – a Quay Art’s wedding, in a choice of unique ceremony rooms, right by the river.

At the end of 2011 I met for the first time with Lesa from I Heart Buttons, Inspired Island Events, top Island chef Martyn Cutler and various other wedding suppliers including Love Umbrellas, Laurel Designs Stationary, Claire Ogden Designs and Kelly’s Eye Boutique for a wedding photo shoot.

The Quay was just getting ready to launch itself as a contemporary wedding venue after numerous requests from art lovers wanting to tie the knot and we were tasked with dressing the venue to run a couple through a Quay Arts wedding.

Massive thanks to the lovely couple Marie and Sam for taking part in the day and making it so much fun and I hope you enjoy the photos. If you’re planning your wedding at Quay Arts then why not get in touch to chat about your day.

Tonight, MP’s voted in favour of same-sex marriage in England and Wales by 400 to 175 despite the opposition of almost half the Conservative MPs including Isle of Wight MP, Andrew Turner.

Commenting on the key House of Commons vote Prime Minister David Cameron described the approval as “an important step forward” that strengthens society.

Deputy Prime Minister and Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg added: “I genuinely believe that we will look back on today as a landmark for equality in Britain. Tonight’s vote shows Parliament is very strongly in favour of equal marriage.

No matter who you are and who you love, we are all equal. Marriage is about love and commitment, and it should no longer be denied to people just because they are gay.”

Yesterday, the amazing Seaside themed East Dene wedding of Jo and Alex was published on one of the top 5 weddings blogs in the UK – “OMG I’m getting married!”

The awesomely titled blog started a few years ago when the owner Alexis was planning her own big day and wanted a way to catalogue her inspiration. Since then it’s become far bigger than one blogger writing about one couples day and is a great source of inspiration for any couples planning their day so I’m very proud to have my work published on her wedding blog.

Massive thanks of course have to go to the awesome couple Jo and Alex for having such an wonderful day and for allowing me the honour of being their wedding photographer. Earlier last week the new official ceremonies guide for the Isle of Wight arrived. It gives information on weddings, civil partnerships and other civil ceremonies on the IOW including the Register Office and licensed venues. In a small, wedding photography way, this was a pretty exciting moment for me as the guide is sent to anyone enquiring about getting married on the Island, as well as those giving notice or booking a civil ceremony and I have been lucky enough to have my wedding photography featured throughout the guide!

Working closely with the Registrars the excellent designers Marcus and Luci at Pineneedle have done a fantastic job producing the all-encompassing guide with tons of useful information in (as well as some awesome photos)! 🙂

If you’re getting married on the Island then give the Registrars a call to get your copy: 01983 823233 or you can view the Isle of Wight ceremonies guide online.
