You’ve seen trash the dress, how about trash the cake (or a cake smash)? That’s right – WEDDING CAKE FOOD FIGHT!

After the amazing reaction we had to our trash the dress photoshoot (where the bride ended up in the sea wearing her stunning wedding dress) we were inundated with emails from Isle of Wight couples who were dying to rock their frocks giving their dress a proper send off by doing something a little crazy. I’ve wanted to do something involving wedding cakes for a long time as being totally honest, they just look too yummy and pristine to be left sitting all day.

After an inspiring chat with the wonderful Jade Thornton of Petticoats and Frills Cakes the hunt was on to see which of the newlyweds who got in touch would be up for getting a little messy on our next shoot. Up stepped Carrie and Phil who wanted to celebrate their first anniversary in style by doing a trash the dress photoshoot!

Jade spends her time carefully crafting the most beautiful wedding cakes, but sometimes she likes to do things a little differently. For this photoshoot she made a cake which was elegant in design – a simple white wedding cake that would suit any kind of wedding – but inside each tier was made of the most brightly coloured cake you’ve ever seen! I think the proper name is colour pop but whatever it was – Amazing.

We were once again joined by the wonderfully talented duo Donna Jones (hair) and Jo Lofthouse (makeup) who upon Carrie’s suggestion transformed her with a vintage look influenced by our location for the shoot – an abandoned holiday camp on the Island. The contrast between the dirty, smashed up, derelict building and the beautifully clean and pristine couple (and cake) really drew to me to this setting and it worked perfectly as a location for our wedding cake food fight!

Anyway, enough rambling from me. Love it or hate it, here is our latest trash the dress cake smash photoshoot (beginning with a cherish the dress session).

A trash the dress photoshoot is something that I’ve been dying to do since beginning my journey as a creative wedding photographer. I’ve always thought that the Isle of Wight was the perfect setting for it with miles of sandy beaches, gorgeous woods and other beautiful locations so all I needed to do was find a bride who was keen to get involved…

So what is a trash the dress session?

Also known as a rock the frock, fearless bridal (or the less damaging version is called a cherish the dress); a trash the dress session is a photoshoot where you get to dust off your wedding dress one last time and give it a final outing to somewhere you wouldn’t dared to have gone on your wedding day through fear of getting your perfect, clean white dress dirty!

You can go as crazy as you like. You might want to do a cherish the dress photoshoot where you pick a picturesque location that you’d loved to have had your wedding photos taken in and we create something beautiful for you. Or if you’re like Danielle, you might want to do something that’s a total contrast to your perfectly clean wedding day photography.

Danielle is an amazing bride who got married two years ago and fully embraced the concept, wanting to create some awesome photos and give her dress a good send off at the same time. We exchanged excited emails whilst planning her trash the dress photoshoot that were full of crazy ideas, each one taking it a step further until finally we had our concept.

At this point I enlisted the help of two incredibly talented wedding businesses on the Island – Donna Jones (wedding hair) and Jo Lofthouse (wedding makeup) to see if they were up for getting involved. Luckily for us, they were, and each planned Daniellie’s hair and makeup ready for our shoot.

The day finally came and we excitedly headed out for our trash the dress session. As you can see, it began as a cherish the dress creating some beautiful post-wedding portraits in the golden evening sun, (and we were even able to borrow a Porsche!) but then things changed quite dramatically.

We moved locations at this point and Jo and Donna created their second look for the night re-doing Danielle’s hair and makeup on location (these girls really can work anywhere) as we headed to the beach. I’ll let the pictures show you what happened next. Enjoy!

Quay Arts  is a licensed wedding venue right in the centre of Newport, Isle of Wight alongside the harbour. It is probably best known as a contemporary art gallery but did you know that you can also get married at Quay Arts? That’s right – a Quay Art’s wedding, in a choice of unique ceremony rooms, right by the river.

At the end of 2011 I met for the first time with Lesa from I Heart Buttons, Inspired Island Events, top Island chef Martyn Cutler and various other wedding suppliers including Love Umbrellas, Laurel Designs Stationary, Claire Ogden Designs and Kelly’s Eye Boutique for a wedding photo shoot.

The Quay was just getting ready to launch itself as a contemporary wedding venue after numerous requests from art lovers wanting to tie the knot and we were tasked with dressing the venue to run a couple through a Quay Arts wedding.

Massive thanks to the lovely couple Marie and Sam for taking part in the day and making it so much fun and I hope you enjoy the photos. If you’re planning your wedding at Quay Arts then why not get in touch to chat about your day.

Apple orchard wedding at Afton Park Apple Farm Freshwater

Afton Apple Farm as the name suggests, is a beautiful apple orchard near Freshwater on the Isle of Wight. It’s an accredited wedding venue that I’ve been dying to organise a photo-shoot at for a long time and so this summer I kept a weekend clear and called on some of the amazing wedding suppliers I’m lucky enough to have worked with on the Island.

Working closely with Chris from Inspired Island Events who was the talented stylist for the shoot we decided to really play on the fact that we had access to this picturesque orchard and accompanying gardens by going with an apple theme. Once this decided it gave us a colour scheme to work within – green, white and hints of red tying in with the apple theme further.

Our vision for the photo-shoot was to provide an elegant outdoor wedding right in the heart of the orchard by placing a ten-seat banquet style table amongst rows of apple trees.

With his in mind I started my email mission contacting each Isle of Wight wedding supplier giving them nothing more than the general concept and colour scheme leaving them to do whatever they wanted for the day. I had total trust in each of them as I knew it would be good so gave them as little guidance as possible and boy did it pay off! Read on to find out more.

The shoot started early on a misty Sunday morning back in August and I was appreciative of those involved just to be out of bed at that hour! Hair and makeup got underway first by Rita Camassa (MUA) and Chelsea (Jaks Hair) working from a marquee in the gardens before Dawn from Gems Bridal wear set to work dressing the models in the most beautiful dresses by Maggie Sottero and White One.

The dresses were selected by Chris from Inspired Island Events as they complimented the natural theme for the day.

As the models got ready the rest of the group got to work assisting Chris in setting up the banquet table in the stunning orchard and decorating it with apple themed centrepieces (using real apples) by JoJo from Blushing Blooms, favour boxes (with apple green ribbons), apple leaf name tags by Nicky Marinelli and the cutest apple printed material napkins by Hannah from Sew Special Bunting amongst other wonderful apple goodness.

As the sun began to burn through the mist the first model, Rosie, came to join us and the shoot began. Rosie modelled a Gresham style wedding dress with chiffon gown by White One as well as jewellery by Sophie Honeybourne and an apple themed button bouquet by I Heart Buttons.

Next up came our ‘couple’ for the day – Cordelia and Mark.

Mark wore a grey lounge suit and waistcoat supplied by Osborne’s which we coupled with an apple green skinny tie before realising that we had completely overlooked cuff-links  Never-fear though as the ever resourceful seamstress Dawn and florist JoJo picked tiny crab apples from a nearby tree and combined with a Swarovski crystal pin fashioned a ‘fresh’ set of cuff-links for our groom!

Cordelia wore the Courtney wedding dress by Maggie Sottero complete with diamanté embellishment combining it with bouquets carefully crafted to include fresh green apples in their design. And then in our final few frames our wonderful bride and groom wandered amongst the grassy orchard playing with umbrellas by Love Umbrellas.

Organising the apple farm wedding photo-shoot was great fun and the models and suppliers involved were excellent to work with. It really was just like arranging a miniature wedding where we had to bring in near enough everything used in the shoot right the way up from chairs and cutlery (by Coast and Country Marquees) to power for the hairdresser working out of the marquee being handed by Prosafe Electrical!

Many thanks to everyone involved in making the photoshoot such a success:

And finally, thank you Mr Weatherman for giving us some gorgeous sunshine in what was an otherwise terrible summer!

On Sunday I had the pleasure of shooting for Karen of Dornellie, an IOW business which specialises in beautiful bespoke, hand crafted wedding veils. I met Karen at a bridal show in December and we have been excitedly discussing this photoshoot since. The aim was to link up with other likeminded, fresh thinking, Island businesses to create some fantastic photos together. Karen worked really hard behind the scenes and managed to bring together a brilliant group of Isle of Wight wedding suppliers including The Royal Hotel, Wight Vintage, I Heart Buttons, Oh So Vintage, Harmony Beauty, Very Vintage (at Scott’s Hair Salon), IOW Pearl and the fantastic models Clare, Lisa, Victoria, Megan, Debbie, Jasmin and Phil.

Thanks to all involved and below are a few of my favourite photos from the day.
